Isles: Photographer & Interdisciplinary Artist

Isles is an interdisciplinary artist and photographer working with experimental photography, mark-making, painting and projection. London-born and raised, their work stems from an ongoing practice to find stillness within urban environments and return back to the body - the individual body and, the wider body of earth.

Isles’ work begins in small, everyday places that we walk by each day - canals, ponds, puddles, city parks. During long, meandering walks across the city and a camera in hand, reflections fracture and reassemble the world; turning stillness into motion and back again.

Influenced by mindfulness walking meditation and John Berger's Ways of Seeing, the work is more about the process of looking rather than the outcome - to let go of what is known or expected, to become lost, and to really see the world again. Isles’ work is an expression of this practice and has become an ongoing dialogue with water and light; finding lines, textures, shapes and movement within the sharp, grey corners of big cities.

This dialogue between light and form extends into a new series of portraits where the face/body becomes the surface - something to be moved across and marked temporarily with the movements of light and shadow.
